To create a barcode for free, pick the type above (EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128, Code 39, ITF-14, GS1-128, ISBN, Data Matrix or PDF417), type the content — or paste up to 500 lines for a batch — and download PNG or SVG files. Check digits are computed for you, there is no watermark, and everything is drawn in your browser.
Which barcode type do you need?
| Type | Content | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| EAN-13 | 13 digits (12 + check digit) | Products sold in shops outside North America |
| UPC-A | 12 digits | Products sold in shops in the US and Canada |
| EAN-8 | 8 digits | Very small packages (sweets, cosmetics) |
| ISBN | ISBN-13 number, printed as an EAN-13 | Books |
| Code 128 | Letters, digits, symbols | Internal labels, stock, inventory, parcels — no registration needed |
| Code 39 | Upper-case letters, digits, a few symbols | Badges, industry and older systems |
| ITF-14 | 14 digits | Outer shipping cartons |
| GS1-128 | Data with application identifiers: (01) product, (10) lot, (17) expiry… | Logistics labels with batch and expiry date |
| Data Matrix | Text or numbers, 2D | Small parts, healthcare, electronics; readable when tiny |
| PDF417 | Text, 2D, high capacity | ID cards, boarding passes, shipping documents |
Rule of thumb: selling in shops → EAN-13 or UPC-A with a number from GS1; anything internal → Code 128, which accepts any text and needs no registration.
Getting a barcode that scans
- Size: an EAN-13 is nominally about 37 × 26 mm. It can be printed between roughly 80 % and 200 % of that size; much smaller, and cheap scanners fail.
- Quiet zone: leave a blank margin on both sides of linear barcodes (at least 10 bar widths). Text or a frame touching the bars stops the scan.
- Contrast: dark bars on a light background. Avoid red bars — most laser scanners use red light and see red as white — and avoid reversed (light on dark) codes for retail.
- Format: SVG for printing and layout software, since it stays sharp at any size; PNG at 4 to 8 px per bar for documents and labels.
- Test before printing a run: scan the code with a phone app or the actual scanner, from the printed sheet.
Batch barcodes for stock and labels
- Export your product or asset codes from a spreadsheet, one per line.
- Paste them in the content box: each line becomes its own barcode, and invalid lines are flagged.
- Download the ZIP: one PNG or SVG file per code, named after its content, ready for a label template or mail merge.
