Frequently asked questions
How do I colorize a black and white photo for free?
Drop the photo and click “Colorize the photo”: an open AI model (DDColor, 2023) guesses the most likely colours — skin, sky, plants, clothes — while keeping the original sharpness. The result arrives in seconds, with no watermark or sign-up.
Are the colours the real ones?
No, and no tool can promise that: a black and white photo doesn't hold the original colours. The AI suggests plausible colours, often right for skin, sky or grass, less reliable for a garment or a car. It's an interpretation, to be presented as such.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
Yes, and we'd rather say so: this model is too heavy for a browser, so the photo is sent to our own server, colorized, then deleted right away. The result is removed as soon as you download it (or after 15 minutes). Nothing is kept or reused.
Is there a limit?
So everyone gets a turn: one photo at a time per person and 30 per hour at most, 25 MB maximum. If many people are colorizing at once, the page shows your place in the queue.
What about a damaged photo (scratches, stains)?
Restore it first with the “Restore a scan” tool, then colorize the result: colorization doesn't fix scratches.
