To convert JPEG XL to JPG for free, drop your .jxl images above and click Convert: they are decoded in your browser — even in browsers that cannot display JPEG XL yet — and saved as JPGs that every app, phone and website accepts. Nothing is uploaded, and you can convert many images at once. Each file can be up to 200 MB, and there is no fixed limit on the number of files: very large batches depend on your device's memory.
Why a .jxl file will not open
JPEG XL (.jxl) is a recent image format: smaller files than JPEG at the same quality, with transparency and HDR. Support is still uneven: Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad has read it since version 17 (2023), while Chrome and Firefox have been adding it behind a setting during 2026, depending on the version. Many photo apps, social networks and online forms still refuse it. Converting to JPG is the simplest way to share or upload the picture.
What changes in the JPG
- Transparency: JPG has none, so transparent areas are placed on a white background (checked on a test image). Keep transparency with JPEG XL to PNG.
- Quality: you choose the JPG quality; the default suits sharing. JPG is lossy, so keep the .jxl original if you may need it later.
- Size and pixels: the width and height are unchanged.
