Why WMV files are hard to play today
WMV (Windows Media Video) was Microsoft's video format of the 2000s: Windows Movie Maker exported to it by default, and many old camcorders, screen recorders and corporate videos used it.

Converting to MP4 with H.264 — the most widely supported video format — solves all of these at once.
What the conversion does
- Video: WMV 7, 8, 9 and VC-1 streams are decoded and re-encoded to H.264. Quality options: High (CRF 20), Balanced (CRF 24), Smaller file (CRF 29).
- Sound: WMA audio is converted to AAC at 192 kb/s.
- Resolution: kept as it is, or reduced if you choose a smaller size; it is never enlarged.
- Protected files: WMV files locked with Windows Media DRM (old online stores and rentals) cannot be converted — by any tool, legally.
