How to remove silence from a video

How do I automatically remove silence from a video?

Drop the video: a small neural network (Silero VAD) finds where someone is speaking, every 32 milliseconds. Gaps longer than half a second (a quarter of a second in “Tight” mode) are cut, keeping a small margin around words so nothing is clipped. Click “Remove silence” and download the result.

How is this different from a simple volume threshold?

Volume-based tools only cut what is very quiet: as soon as there is background noise (street, fans, ambient music) they find nothing. Here the voice itself is recognised, not the sound level. On a street recording, the tool removes the 18 seconds without speech where a volume threshold removes only 2.

Can I keep some silences?

Yes. Every cut shows in red on the timeline and in the “Cuts” list: listen to it, then click it to restore it. Intended silences (a silent shot, a dramatic pause) stay in the video. The “Preview without silences” box lets you hear the result before processing.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Detection and editing happen in your browser: the file never leaves your device. The model (2.3 MB) is downloaded once from our site.

How long does it take?

Speech detection is fast (a few seconds for 10 minutes of audio). For a video, the picture has to be re-encoded to cut on the exact frame: allow a few minutes for a 5-minute 1080p video on a recent computer, more on a phone. Audio alone is ready in seconds. Limit: 1 hour per file.

Does it work for a podcast or an interview?

Yes, that is the main use: podcasts, interviews, filmed lessons, talking-head videos, voice memos. Next, you can add automatic subtitles or remove background noise with “Enhance voice”.
